Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

  • Candidates generally require a master’s degree or equivalent qualification from a recognized university or institution.
  • General and General-EWS candidates must ordinarily have at least 55% marks in the qualifying postgraduate examination.
  • OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD and third-gender candidates are generally eligible with at least 50% marks, subject to the applicable UGC rules.
  • Candidates awaiting their final postgraduate result may be permitted to appear provisionally, provided they complete the degree within the period prescribed in the information bulletin.
  • Applicants holding a four-year bachelor’s degree may be considered for JRF or PhD-related eligibility where permitted under the 2026 rules. Such candidates must carefully check whether they are eligible for Assistant Professor consideration.

Age Limit

  • For JRF, the upper age limit is generally 30 years as on the cut-off date specified in the examination bulletin.
  • Relaxation is available to eligible reserved categories, women and candidates with qualifying research experience, subject to UGC-NET regulations.
  • There is ordinarily no upper age limit for Assistant Professor eligibility or PhD admission through UGC NET.
  • The date of birth and category entered in the application must match the supporting certificates produced during verification.

Fees

  • The result can be viewed and downloaded without paying any fee.
  • Examination fees were payable during the online application process and varied by category.
  • Candidates should verify the category-wise fee printed in the June 2026 information bulletin, as the fee structure may be revised for each cycle.
  • Any applicable processing charges or taxes are normally collected separately by the payment gateway.

Selection Process

  1. Computer-Based Test: Candidates appear for Paper I and the chosen subject paper in a single computer-based examination session.
  2. Answer-Key and Evaluation: NTA evaluates recorded responses after considering valid objections received against the provisional answer key. The final answer key is used to prepare scores.
  3. Result and Qualification: Candidates are declared eligible for JRF, Assistant Professor or PhD admission based on their aggregate performance, category and the prescribed subject-wise cut-off.

Merely qualifying UGC NET does not automatically provide a government appointment. Universities and colleges conduct their own recruitment or admission procedures and may require separate applications, interviews and document verification.
