Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

  • Candidates must have passed the Class 12 or equivalent examination from a recognised board or institution.
  • Applicants must possess stenography skills in English or Hindi, depending on the option selected in the application form.
  • The prescribed skill-test standards differ for Grade C and Grade D posts.
  • Candidates awaiting the required qualification as of the eligibility cut-off date are not eligible unless permitted by the detailed notification.

Age Limit

  • For Stenographer Grade C, the usual age requirement is 18 to 30 years.
  • For Stenographer Grade D, the usual age requirement is 18 to 27 years.
  • The exact age-reckoning date will be the one specified in the recruitment notification.
  • Upper-age relaxation is applicable to SC, ST, OBC, PwBD, ex-servicemen and other eligible categories under Central Government rules.

Fees

  • The standard application fee is generally ₹100.
  • Women candidates and applicants belonging to SC, ST, PwBD and eligible ex-servicemen categories are normally exempt from paying the fee.
  • Any applicable fee must be paid online through the payment options made available by SSC.
  • The fee, once paid, is generally non-refundable.

Selection Process

The SSC Stenographer recruitment process is completed in the following stages:

  1. Computer-Based Examination: Candidates take an objective test covering General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, and English Language and Comprehension. Applicable negative marking will be imposed as specified in the examination notice.
  2. Stenography Skill Test: Candidates shortlisted from the computer-based examination must complete a qualifying stenography test in English or Hindi. The dictation speed and transcription time vary for Grade C and Grade D.
  3. Document Verification and Final Appointment: Qualified candidates are considered for document verification, post allocation and appointment after verification of eligibility, category certificates and other required records.

How to Apply

The online application process must be completed within the dates announced by SSC. Candidates who have already applied can use the same portal to download their hall ticket by following these steps:

  1. Visit the official SSC website at ssc.gov.in.
  2. Select the Login or Register option on the homepage and enter the registration number and password.
  3. Open the admission certificate or admit card section available on the candidate dashboard.
  4. Select SSC Stenographer Grade C and D Examination 2026 from the list of active examinations.
  5. Verify the displayed information, including the candidate's name, roll number, photograph, examination date, shift and test-centre address.
  6. Download the admit card PDF and take a clear printout for use on the examination day.
  7. Carry the printed admission certificate, an original valid photo identity card and any additional documents listed in the exam instructions.
  8. Contact SSC promptly through the official helpdesk if the photograph, category, examination city or other important details are incorrect.

Candidates should reach the centre before the reporting time. Entry may not be permitted after the examination gate closes, and prohibited electronic devices should not be carried inside the venue.
