Candidates should note that November 22 is the scheduled commencement date for the IFS Main examination. The detailed paper-wise timetable, including reporting time, examination shifts and subject codes, is expected to be released separately before the examination.

Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

  • Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or equivalent institution.
  • The degree must include at least one of the following subjects: Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics or Zoology.
  • Candidates with a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Forestry or Engineering are also eligible.
  • Applicants awaiting their qualifying examination results may be permitted to apply provisionally, subject to the conditions stated in the detailed notification.
  • Only candidates who qualify in the Civil Services Preliminary Examination and meet the prescribed IFS cut-off can appear for the Main examination.

Age Limit

  • The minimum age is expected to be 21 years.
  • The upper age limit is generally 32 years as on the cut-off date specified in the notification.
  • Age relaxation is applicable to SC, ST, OBC, persons with benchmark disabilities, ex-servicemen and other eligible categories under Central Government rules.
  • Candidates must verify their date-of-birth eligibility from the detailed notification before submitting an application.

Fees

  • The expected application fee for eligible candidates is Rs. 100.
  • Female candidates and applicants belonging to SC, ST and specified PwBD categories are generally exempt from paying the fee.
  • Payment can be made through the online facilities listed in the application portal.
  • Any separate Main examination fee, if applicable, will be communicated to shortlisted candidates through the Detailed Application Form instructions.

Selection Process

The UPSC Indian Forest Service selection process consists of the following stages:

  1. Civil Services Preliminary Examination: A common objective-type screening examination is conducted for Civil Services and Indian Forest Service applicants. IFS candidates must meet the separate qualifying standard prescribed for the service.
  2. Indian Forest Service Main Examination: Shortlisted candidates take descriptive written papers covering General English, General Knowledge and optional subjects chosen under the prescribed scheme.
  3. Personality Test/Interview: Candidates who qualify in the Main examination are called for an interview. Final merit is prepared using marks obtained in the Main written examination and personality test, subject to medical fitness and document verification.

  1. Visit the official UPSC website at upsc.gov.in and open the online application portal linked with the Civil Services and Indian Forest Service Examination 2026.
  2. Create an account or complete the required registration using an active mobile number and email address. Candidates should ensure that their name and date of birth match their matriculation certificate.
  3. Select the option indicating candidature for the Indian Forest Service Examination while completing the application form.
  4. Enter personal, educational, category and communication details carefully. Choose the preferred Preliminary Examination centre, subject to availability.
  5. Upload the required photograph, signature and identity document in the specified format and file size.
  6. Pay the application fee, where applicable, and submit the form before the deadline.
  7. Download the confirmation page and retain a copy of the submitted application for future use.
  8. Candidates who qualify for the Main examination must complete the Detailed Application Form within the separate window notified by UPSC and submit supporting educational and category documents.
  9. Before the examination, download the e-admit card and check the paper-wise timetable, venue, reporting instructions and permitted items.
