Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

  • Candidates must hold a master's degree or equivalent qualification from a recognised university or institution.
  • General and unreserved candidates are ordinarily required to secure at least 55% aggregate marks in the qualifying degree.
  • Candidates belonging to OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD and other eligible reserved categories ordinarily receive a relaxation, with the minimum qualifying benchmark generally set at 50%.
  • Candidates appearing in the final year of their master's programme may apply provisionally, subject to completing the degree within the period prescribed by NTA and UGC.
  • Subject-specific qualification requirements and exemptions must be verified from the relevant examination information bulletin.

Age Limit

  • For Junior Research Fellowship, the upper age limit is generally 30 years as on the cut-off date specified in the examination notification.
  • Age relaxation is available to eligible reserved categories, women candidates and candidates with qualifying research or other prescribed experience.
  • There is normally no upper age limit for Assistant Professor eligibility.
  • PhD admission eligibility is governed by the applicable UGC, university and institutional rules.

Fees

  • General/Unreserved candidates: ₹1,150.
  • General-EWS/OBC-NCL candidates: ₹600.
  • SC/ST/PwD/Third Gender candidates: ₹325.
  • Processing charges and applicable taxes may be collected separately by the payment gateway. Candidates should confirm the fee in the examination-cycle notification before making payment.

Selection Process

  1. Computer-Based Test: Candidates appear for Paper I and Paper II in a single examination session. Paper I assesses teaching and research aptitude, while Paper II covers the selected subject.
  2. Result and Cut-Off Evaluation: Marks or percentile scores are compared with the minimum qualifying criteria and the relevant subject-wise, category-wise cut-off.
  3. Eligibility Declaration: Successful candidates are declared eligible for JRF and Assistant Professor, Assistant Professor and PhD admission, or PhD admission only, depending on their performance and applicable rules.

Qualifying UGC NET does not automatically provide a government appointment. Eligible candidates must separately apply for teaching, research or PhD opportunities advertised by universities, colleges and institutions.
